Certified Analytics Professional Certification brought to you by INFORMS

CAP Certification for Organizations

CAP certification gives organizations a verified, standardized way to assess analytics competency, develop talent across career levels, and signal to the market that your analytics function operates at a high standard. CAP now comes in three levels, each calibrated to a different stage of an analytics career.

Why Should Organizations Hire CAP-Certified Analysts?

Hiring analytics talent is difficult because the field has no universal standard. Job titles vary, degrees vary, and self-reported skills are hard to verify. CAP certification changes that. A CAP credential is an independently validated signal that the candidate has demonstrated mastery of the analytics process across all seven domains, not just in one tool or method.

Specific reasons organizations prefer CAP-certified candidates:

Verified competency

CAP is not a course completion certificate. It requires passing a rigorous proctored exam and, for CAP-Expert, meeting experience requirements and having soft skills confirmed by an employer or colleague.

Vendor- and technology-neutral

CAP assesses the analytics process, not proficiency in any specific platform or language. A CAP-certified analyst can contribute regardless of your technology stack.

Ethics commitment

All CAP certificants agree to the INFORMS Code of Ethics. In a field where data misuse and algorithmic bias are growing concerns, that commitment matters.

Consistent quality signal across levels

CAP-Essentials, CAP-Pro, and CAP-Expert each represent a defined level of competency. When you specify a CAP level in a job posting, you are communicating precise expectations to candidates.

CAP-X, the accredited standard

CAP-Expert is accredited by ANAB (ANSI National Accreditation Board) under ISO/IEC 17024, the international standard for personnel certification bodies. The program has been independently audited for rigor and consistency.

How Does Analytics Certification Benefit a Company?

Certification benefits go beyond the individual.

When a meaningful portion of your analytics team is CAP-certified, the organizational effects compound:

A shared professional language.

All three CAP levels are based on the same INFORMS Analytics Framework, a seven-domain model covering business problem framing, data, methodology, model development, deployment, and lifecycle management. Certified team members share a common methodology and vocabulary, which reduces friction on projects and improves communication between senior and junior staff.

Faster onboarding.

New hires who are CAP-certified arrive with a baseline understanding of how analytics work should be structured. That shared foundation shortens the time to productivity.

A visible career development path.

The three-level structure gives analytics professionals a clear progression: CAP-Essentials for those building their foundation, CAP-Pro for those ready to own projects, CAP-Expert for those leading strategy. Organizations that support certification at all three levels create a retention incentive and a development pipeline.

Credibility with stakeholders.

An analytics team with CAP-certified members can point to an externally validated standard. That credibility matters when presenting recommendations to leadership, boards, or clients.

Reduced hiring risk.

Specifying CAP certification in job requirements filters the candidate pool before the first interview. It also gives you a structured way to assess internal promotions.

How Do I Build a Certified Analytics Team?

Building a certified analytics team does not require everyone to certify at the same time or at the same level. A practical approach:

  • Start with an assessment. Review your team against the three CAP levels. Who is executing foundational work (CAP-Essentials)? Who is leading or owning projects (CAP-Pro)? Who is setting strategy and driving organizational outcomes (CAP-Expert)? Use the comparison table below to map your team.

  • Set certification expectations by role. Add CAP level preferences or requirements to relevant job descriptions. This creates consistency in hiring and communicates professional standards to your team.

  • Support preparation. INFORMS offers optional CAP Prep courses for all three levels. Exam blueprints and study guides are available free at certifiedanalytics.org/exam-resources. Providing study time and covering exam fees are low-cost investments with measurable returns.

  • Register your team. CAP-Essentials and CAP-Pro candidates register and pay directly at app.prolydian.com/organizations/INFORMS. No application is required for either level. CAP-Expert candidates complete an application first.

  • Contact INFORMS for group pricing. Organizations certifying multiple employees can inquire about group pricing by contacting [email protected].

  • Use the public registry to track active certifications. Once team members are certified, their credentials appear in the public CAP registry at certifiedanalytics.org/public-registry. Certifications that lapse are automatically removed.

Using CAP in Hiring

CAP certification is increasingly appearing in analytics job postings as a preferred or required credential. Here is how organizations use it effectively:

  • Add 'CAP preferred' or 'CAP-Pro or higher required' to analytics job postings to filter for candidates with verified competency.

  • Use the three-level framework to calibrate seniority expectations. A CAP-Essentials holder is demonstrating foundational knowledge. A CAP-Pro holder is demonstrating project ownership. A CAP-Expert holder is demonstrating strategic leadership.

  • Verify a candidate's current CAP status through the public registry, or request their digital badge link, before extending an offer.

  • Ask candidates about their certification level and recertification history as part of the interview process to assess commitment to professional development.

Verifying a CAP Certification

The public CAP registry lists all active CAP certificants by name and certification level. Certifications that have lapsed or been revoked do not appear in the active registry. Verification takes seconds and requires no account or login.
